How to spend the day
We know your time is precious and you'll want to make the most of your visit. Whether you're spending the whole day with us, or just popping in, here's what we think you should prioritise:
Visit the marketplace after checking in: Find your subject stand and speak to academic staff about your course. There may be some current students there too. After that, take a look at the other stands to find out more about the University. You could learn about scholarships and bursaries, get finance information, and see what student support is available. There's also a stand where you can book your accommodation tour.
Attend the Welcome Talk: Get an introduction to Sunderland and the University. You'll hear from a panel of current students, members of our executive team, and alumni on what makes Sunderland a great place to study.
Attend your subject talk: Make sure to head to the room where your talk is at in plenty of time. Our event staff and Student Ambassadors will be on hand to help direct you.
Go on a campus tour: This will give you a general idea of where things are on campus. Your subject talk will have a more specific facilities tour included.
See our accommodation (if relevant): If you're moving away from home for university, you'll want to see what our accommodation looks like. Remember to coordinate your tour time with your subject talk so you don't miss either – speak to event staff to discuss timings.
Attend your subject talk: If your subject talk happens to be during your visit, we recommend that you prioritise this. Subject talks are a great way to find out more about your chosen course. They're often followed by a tour of the teaching facilities too. If there's time, you could also pop to the marketplace afterwards to ask academic staff any questions you may have.
Take a tour: Depending on your needs, we'd recommend choosing either a campus or accommodation tour. You probably won't have time for both if you're going to your subject talk. Think about what is best for you - if you're living at home for university, then a campus tour makes more sense. If you're planning to move away, an accommodation tour is the better option.
Speak to academic staff: Head to the marketplace after checking in and find your subject stand. Here you'll be able to speak to staff about your chosen course and get some answers to your questions. If your subject talk and tour happens to be during your visit, you may be able to fit this in.
See the campus: You may have time for a full campus tour, delivered by our Student Ambassadors, or you may wish to have a quick look around yourself. Speak to event staff for directions.
Our recommendations are just a guide of course – you can pick and choose activities depending on your personal priorities. Just think about timings – you may not be able to attend everything if you arrive near the end of the day.
What to ask at an Open Day
Wondering what to ask staff and students when you're here?
A good place to start could be information about your course. You could ask about:
Contact time: How many hours will you be in a lecture or workshop compared to independent study time?
Assignments: What types of assignments will you do? Essays, reports, projects, experiments, presentations and performances are all types of assignments and assessments – which ones will you do?
Careers: What jobs are available to you after studying this course? Are there any placements or workplace opportunities as part of the course?
Extracurricular activities: Are there any field trips? Can you take part in any competitions or volunteering projects?
You could also ask our friendly Student Ambassadors (look out for their orange hoodies!) about student life:
Sports and societies: Which clubs are available to join? How much do they cost and how often do they meet?
Living in Sunderland: What is it like to be a student in Sunderland? What is the cost of living and what is there to do?
Remember that there's no such thing as a silly question and we want to make sure you get all the answers you need.
