This course will give you the skills, knowledge, experience, and confidence to be employable in the film, TV, and media industry.

Throughout the course, you'll work on a range of projects. You'll develop your practical production skills in areas including:

  • Screenwriting
  • Camera
  • Sound
  • Editing
  • Lighting
  • Colour grading
  • Producing
  • Directing.

Our expert lecturing team and first-class equipment will enhance your learning experience. You'll work with specialised cameras, sound recording equipment, movement rigs, and professional editing software packages such as Avid Media Composer.

You'll work on group production projects supported by workshops, studio sessions, and tutorials. There will also be masterclasses led by industry professionals. Another great opportunity is learning editing and sustainable production.

The aim of the course is that you further develop your understanding of film and television production, but at the heart of it is employability. We want you to work as close as possible to the production process and techniques you would find in industry. This combination of creative practice, research, and reflection will enable you to approach things with an open and critical mind. It will also provide you with the ability to communicate your ideas in a variety of forms.

Previous students on the course have graduated and entered the industry in various roles. Our alumni are working as directors, producers, camera operators, editors, and videographers.

Postgraduate module credits should total 180. If optional modules are available alongside core modules on your course, you should choose an amount that totals 180 credits.

How you'll learn

You'll work on group production projects supported by workshops, studio sessions, and tutorials. You'll have access to cutting-edge facilities, including a remarkable LED volume virtual production environment, green screen stage, a full body motion capture system, HD TV studio, and outside broadcast facilities. You can take advantage of our industry contacts including The Royal Television Society, ITV, BBC, North East Screen, and independent television production companies. There are also masterclasses led by industry professionals.

Assessment methods include your practical work with supporting reports that place the work in its academic context.
