Course summary

This course is for current social workers, care practitioners, and other related professions. It explores various areas of practice in adult safeguarding.

You'll review legislation, guidance, and underpinning theories and models of safeguarding practice. You'll explore current research and share your knowledge and experience with others.

What you'll study

This course is worth 30 credits. It provides a recap of the legislation and guidance around safeguarding. This is under Section 42 of the Care Act and exploration of recent and current research.

Completing the course enables the transition from newly qualified to experienced social worker. It helps show your development. This is measured against the Professional Capabilities Framework (PCF) for social work (British Association of Social Workers, 2018).

How you'll learn

We deliver the course at the Sir Tom Cowie Campus at St Peter's. This is over four months between 9:30am and 4:30pm on the following dates:

  • 12 March 2026
  • 2 April 2026
  • 30 April 2026
  • 21 May 2026
  • 18 June 2026.

The submission date is 9 July 2026.

You're expected to complete extra reading into areas of your interest. You'll also have the chance to share and evaluate your practice with other students.

You'll explore issues through discussion, reading, case study, and application of knowledge. A negotiated assessment in discussion with the course leader will demonstrate your learning.
