Course summary

This module aims to equip healthcare professionals who manage patients with respiratory diseases to develop their knowledge and skills in this area. This course has been developed to be innovative in approach and to develop theoretical and practical skills relevant to practice whilst promoting a holistic, patient-centred approach to management.

The module will cover focused consultation skills, diagnosis of asthma and COPD incorporating World Health Organisation (WHO) and National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) guidelines, the fundamentals involved in managing patients with respiratory disease, pharmacological management of patients with respiratory diseases, practical skills such as spirometry and inhaler usage and the basics of a respiratory examination.

You'll be classroom-based for the four full-day taught sessions and will be expected to work with a clinical lead in practice to refresh and update the knowledge and skills learnt in the classroom.

How you'll learn

This course is taught over four full days over four months. Each day uses a variety of teaching and learning methods, including interactive workshops and will focus on a specific topic that you can then consolidate in clinical practice.

Assessment methods include a poster presentation and VIVA.
