Course summary

Do you have an International English Language Testing System (IELTS) score of 4.5? This English for Academic Purposes (EAP) course will improve your English language skills. It's designed to help you reach the required level of English for your main course. You'll also gain key academic skills such as:

  • Note-taking
  • Seminar participation
  • Presenting
  • Researching
  • Reading and summarising
  • Writing essays and reports.

As well as this, you'll learn all about university life in the UK.

By the end, your English will be the IELTS equivalent of 6.0. This is the level you need to study most of our courses.

What you'll study

You'll build on your existing knowledge of English and develop your academic skills. This will enable you to reach the level of English you need.

You'll learn all about the University before your course starts. British Studies lectures will help you understand the UK and the local area. You'll also attend orientation sessions to help you use the library and learning support services.

How you'll learn

We teach the course through a range of methods including:

  • Small group classes and projects
  • Larger group lectures
  • Individual or small group tutorials.

This allows you practise your English with both your teacher and classmates. You'll receive regular feedback from academic staff to support your development.

You'll also have access to extracurricular material to help you with independent study. This is available through the Virtual Learning Environment, Canvas.

When you pass the course, you'll get a Foundation Certificate of Achievement in EAP. You'll have the English language skills to study your chosen course.
