Course summary

This short course is aimed at healthcare practitioners, helping develop skills in planning and implementing effective teaching, learning, and assessment within clinical practice. The course covers the facilitation of teaching and learning within the clinical practice setting and is designed for healthcare professionals who are required to teach skills, knowledge, and competencies to members of the multidisciplinary team or are expected to undertake such a role.

This course is offered at both Level 6 and Level 7, depending on your qualifications, and will be awarded as one of the following:

  • Undergraduate Certificate of Achievement in Facilitating Learning in Practice
  • Postgraduate Certificate of Achievement in Enhanced Facilitation of Learning in Practice.

What you'll study

You'll explore theories which support teaching and learning with clearly defined links to practice settings. The approaches to teaching in formal and informal settings will be evaluated, equipping you with negotiation and feedback skills as part of your professional development. You'll also learn about the aspects of supervision and mentorship, encouraging reflective practice.

The course explores current approaches to teaching and learning whilst understanding the role diversity plays in a successful workforce. You'll examine contemporary theories of education, analysing implications for clinical knowledge and evidence-based practice within the healthcare workforce and professional learning context.

How you'll learn

The course will be taught on campus on a day release basis, however, there's an expectation that you'll also undertake your own independent studying and some work-based learning to meet the demands of the course.

The duration of the course is 14 weeks in total, with six on-campus teaching days, four directed study days, and four self-directed study days.

Assessment will be a portfolio of evidence, including teaching evidence, resources, and critical reflections and discussions.
