This short course is designed for registered and non-registered clinicians who have studied at Level 5 and above, who want to upskill their knowledge of caring for patients with learning disabilities.

Course summary

This 16-week course covers diverse training for delivering effective and equitable patient care. It will enhance the skills of nurses, physiotherapists, and occupational therapists.

What you'll study

The short course will cover:

  • Contemporary statistics, current research, and evidence on caring for patients with an introduction to learning disability
  • The effects of learning disabilities on patients and carers and associated health conditions, including equality and access to healthcare
  • Managing risks, including capacity, consent, vulnerability, and safeguarding
  • Health inequalities and protected characteristics and analysing the language we use including a trauma-informed approach
  • Health action planning and providing an annual health check.

How you'll learn

The sessions will run every two weeks. It will be a mixture of face-to-face sessions, self-directed study via our Canvas portal, and some online sessions. The sessions will run on Wednesdays 9.30am to 4pm on the following dates:

  • 4 June
  • 18 June
  • 2 July
  • 30 July
  • 13 August (assessment and tutorials)
  • 17 September (assessment day).
