Course summary

This course offers the essential training to deliver fair and effective patient care. It’s suitable for nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, and other healthcare professionals.

You’ll build your skills and explore minor injuries and illnesses in detail. This includes physical examinations and using diagnostic tools. You’ll cover diverse areas such as musculoskeletal, respiratory, gastrointestinal, and more. This gives you the skills to care for a wide range of patients.

The course also covers advanced topics, like eye injuries and mental health first aid. You’ll learn about the importance of informed consent, documentation, and reporting.

Practical learning is a key part of the course. You'll apply what you've learned to practice through case studies and interactive sessions. You’ll also work on your communication skills. This will help you collaborate and take a patient-centred approach.

The course ends with a focus on safe patient management and providing evidence-based care. As an allied healthcare professional, you’ll leave ready to deliver high-quality care.

How you'll learn

We teach the course on campus for one full day per week over 16 weeks. There are 12 places available for Level 6 and 12 available for Level 7.

Assessment methods:

Level 6:

  • Assessment 1: Presentation of information source (20%)
  • Assessment 2: Written reflection of evidence-based learning (80%)
  • Assessment 3: Pass/fail portfolio of application to practice signatures.

Level 7:

  • Assessment 1: Individual resource proposal presentation (100%)
  • Assessment 2: Pass/fail portfolio of application to practice signatures.
