Course summary

This PGCE helps you gain the skills to teach using a range of methods in a clinical setting.

It's ideal if you have significant teaching responsibilities in your role, such as clinical educators. The course focuses on developing practical skills in teaching and assessment. This will help you support colleagues learn more effectively in your clinical setting.

We teach in state-of-the-art clinical and simulation facilties, including the Living Lab. You'll also hear from guest speakers who share their real-world experience.

What you'll study

Core module:

Learning and Teaching: Applying Theory to Practice (30 credits)

This module gives an overview of learning theories in clinical education. You’ll explore practical teaching and learning approaches. These include problem-based learning, small group and one-to-one teaching, and role modelling.

The module also covers a range of teaching methods. You’ll learn to choose the right approach, put it into practice, adapt it as needed, and review how it works in health professions education.

Route module:

Designing Learning and Assessment for the Health Professions (30 credits)

This module covers the theory behind key teaching approaches. These may include problem, case, or team-based learning. You’ll build the skills and confidence to use these methods in your teaching.

You'll explore student support systems such as mentoring, coaching, and supervision. You'll then learn how to apply them in different situations to meet a range of student needs. The module also covers clinical assessments. This includes Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE), skill assessments, and competence.

How you'll learn

The course runs part-time, every Monday from 9:30am to 3:30pm.

We teach using a mix of lectures, group seminars, and interactive workshops. You’ll learn both educational theory and practical skills. This is through methods like interprofessional learning and clinical simulation.

Assessment follows the principles of universal design for learning and includes:

  • Essays
  • An individual presentation (viva)
  • A written module document
  • Verbal defence.
