Foundations of Professional Learning (30 credits)
This module helps you prepare for both university study and your role at work. You'll build your academic skills and learn strategies to stay resilient. You’ll reflect on how you learn and your role in practice, while giving and receiving feedback. You'll explore what professional learning means in social work. You'll become familiar with the frameworks used to assess professional capability in social work.
Values and Ethics for Social Work (30 credits)
In this module, you’ll explore how the role of the social worker has developed over time. You’ll also look at the importance of professional behaviour and clear boundaries. You’ll reflect on your own values and learn about the ethics, standards, and values that guide social work. You’ll explore social work across different service user groups and settings. You’ll also look at how diversity links to discrimination, disadvantage, power, and oppression. Finally, you’ll consider how social workers can challenge these issues by promoting social justice and human rights.
Developing Skills for Practice (30 credits)
You’ll complete Stage 1 of your Professional Standards and Readiness to Practice portfolio. This includes evidence of how you’ve reflected on your personal and professional development. You’ll take part in a community study, where you’ll explore how individuals and communities influence each other. You’ll look at the cultural, economic, and social factors that affect daily life and social justice. You’ll then reflect on your work with service users and carers to develop your communication and interviewing skills.
Understanding Theory for Practice (30 credits)
In this module, you’ll learn about the social science theories that shape social work practice. You’ll explore key ideas, including the connection between individuals and society. You’ll look at how modern society has developed and learn to spot patterns in social life. The module covers topics such as how society is organised, how people relate to each other, and how social change, conflict, and inequality happen. You’ll build skills in comparing different social and psychological theories. You’ll then apply these ideas to real-world events and issues.
