Course summary

Do you want to learn how to support children and families maintain their mental health? This short course is for teachers, SENCOs, or other education and care professionals.

We’ve designed the course in response to growing demand. It'll help you understand evidence-based ways to support people with mental health needs. It also prepares you to respond to the increasing number of social, emotional, and mental health (SEMH) needs at local, regional, and national levels.

If you choose the accredited version, you’ll gain 30 Level 7 credits. You can use these towards further study, including a full master’s degree such as the MA Education or MA SEND.

This course explores a wide range of mental health needs across different stages of education and settings.

You’ll look at how we define these needs, including the challenges in policy and research. You’ll also explore the difficulties in creating effective support for these learners.

You’ll learn about the factors that can affect mental health in children, young people, adults, and those who support them. The course covers key theories and shows how to apply them in different educational settings.

Assessment reflects real workplace situations, helping you develop and improve your practice.

How you'll learn

The course takes place on campus over 10 weeks. You’ll attend one three-hour session each week.

You’ll learn through a range of methods including:

  • Taught seminars
  • Guided tasks and tutor-led study
  • Independent study.

We also encourage you to do your own reading. This will help you build on what you learn and develop your knowledge further.

Entry requirements

Fees and finance support

The course fees vary depending on your status:

  • Accredited course fee: £1,032
  • Partnership school fee: £495
  • Alumni fee: £826.

You may be eligible for full funding for this course. This is through the UKSPF Sunderland Skills and Inclusion Programme. You must be employed by a Sunderland-based company (excluding the public sector).
