New students IT setup

If we've provided you with a temporary password, you'll need to click on the "Change Password" option in Selfcare.

Once you've logged in using your User ID and temporary password, you'll be prompted to create a new password.

Not everyone receives a temporary password, so don't worry if you don't have one. You can still reset your password without one. Using Selfcare, click the 'Reset Forgotten Password' and follow the guidance.

If at any stage during your studies you forget your password, you can reset it yourself using the personal email address we have for you. Using Selfcare, click on the 'Reset Forgotten Password' and then simply put in your full student email address. On the next screen, you'll see part of your personal email, and this is the email that we'll send a verification code to.

If you're happy with the email, click the button to send the verification code. You'll then need to access your personal email for the code. Once you have entered the code, you will be asked for a new password.

If there's no email showing up, please contact our IT Service Desk.

Eduroam is available on campus in all University of Sunderland buildings and provides you with Wi-Fi access to the University of Sunderland network. To connect, find eduroam in your available Wi-Fi networks, connect to it and enter your Microsoft login details (ab01ab@student.sunderland.ac.uk) and password. Eduroam can also be used with the same login credentials when you visit other HE and participating organisations.

Wifinity is only available in University accommodation and provides a platform for TV, Telephone and Broadband Internet via wired and wireless connection, offering connection speeds of 30mbps and unlimited uploads and downloads. You'll also have the option to upgrade to either a 50mbps or 100mbps service, as well as being able to add additional services such as Sky Sports for an additional fee.

You'll need to decide whether you would like to set it up using a mobile app or via a phone number. We recommend, if possible, that you use the mobile app and that you follow these steps via the mobile web browser.

1. Go to https://aka.ms/mfasetup
2. Log in using your University User ID as ab01abc@student.sunderland.ac.uk and your password. You'll then see additional security verification, and how should we contact you? Here you'll need to select ‘I want to set up a different method’. You can then select Authentication Phone or Authentication App.
3. If you select to use the Microsoft Authenticator via your phone, please enter your preferred mobile phone; this will let you choose to have a code sent via text or via phone call whenever you log in. If you selected this, select setup and finish. If you have chosen this option, you may be asked to provide additional security verification; just ignore and press cancel. You will now be set up with authentication.
4. If you have chosen to authenticate via a mobile app, download the Microsoft Authenticator App. This is available on the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. Once downloaded, you will need to configure the app.
5. Select Add School Account and click on the ‘pair using this link’ option if you are using your phone for the setup. On some occasions, you may need to press back and select Add School Account again to pair your device. If you are using a laptop, you can scan the QR code with your mobile device. This is personal to you and should only link to your account.
6. Once you have added the account, you'll receive a notification or a code on the app, approve or enter this on the screen. At this point, you may be taken away from the web browser. If you are simply navigating back to your web browser once you have approved your notification, you can then select 'finished'.
7. You may be asked if you want to provide additional security verification - select cancel.

You will then be set up with authentication and can log in to your online resources, so please ensure your authentication method is accessible during these times.

You can also set up multiple authentication devices; therefore, you can set this up on a tablet alongside your phone, so if you ever lose a phone, you can still authenticate via a different device.

You can access Microsoft 365 in three ways:

• Through a web browser at microsoft365.com

• Using desktop apps like Word or Excel

• Via the OneDrive desktop app (Windows 10/Mac only)

Use your university login: ab01abc@student.sunderland.ac.uk even if you have a @research.sunderland.ac.uk address.

To install Microsoft apps, go to microsoft365.com to download the tools you need.

You'll receive a university email address, your main way to stay connected with classmates, academics, and support teams. Outlook powers your email, so you will have the added flexibility of synchronising across Microsoft 365 products. Be sure to check it regularly, as important updates, including our student newsletter, are always sent there.

OneDrive allows you to store your documents securely in one place, and you'll have access to them from anywhere, whether that's through your phone, tablet, or other devices. It's the best way to store and save documents, as it means you don't have to rely on always having your physical device at hand.

Once you’ve completed enrolment, we’ll set up your Canvas account. This usually takes up to 24 hours, so don’t worry if you can access Microsoft but not Canvas straight away. Canvas is where you can view all of your learning materials and where the majority of your assessments will be submitted. You're also able to use Canvas as a way of communicating with your lecturers.

You’ll log in using your student email and password (you won't need to authenticate your login).
