New students IT setup

A key part of your induction is to be set up and familiar with your key IT resources.

Your User ID

Your User ID is your online key to all our online resources and should not be confused with your student number.

You'll receive your User ID and password details once you've completed online enrolment. This may take anywhere between 15 minutes to a few hours.

You'll have two logins, a standard login which follows the ab01abc format and a Microsoft login containing your full student email address, e.g., ab01abc@student.sunderland.ac.uk.

Managing your password

As part of the enrolment process, you'll need to change your password. This can be either from a temporary one we have provided for you or by resetting it via the personal email you used in your application.

Connecting to the WiFi

Once you join us, you'll only need to connect to our Wi-Fi network once, and then you'll stay connected no matter if you switch or move in between campuses.

Setting up authentication

The process of authenticating is here to keep you safe and secure online. It's a mandatory requirement that all students set up authentication via our provider, Microsoft Authenticator. Authenticating your login simply means you are telling us that it is you accessing your account.

Software and systems

Your student account is powered by Microsoft 365 and will provide you access to a variety of applications such as Microsoft Work, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Excel. You'll also be able to use https://softwaredownload.sunderland.ac.uk to request software to download.
