Benefits of studying abroad

Studying abroad can be a life-changing experience; it's a chance to see the world whilst building your confidence. Living overseas challenges you to think independently, embrace diversity, and develop resilience. Many of our students who study abroad go on to secure graduate-level employment quickly, with enhanced leadership and problem-solving abilities.

You'll have the opportunity to:

  • Discover different academic approaches that will benefit your studies
  • Form lifelong friendships and professional networks
  • Boost your employability with international experience, demonstrating initiative, independence, and effective communication
  • Develop your language skills and intercultural communication
  • Build self-reliance and adaptability.

The opportunities available depend on the course you are studying and the current availability of places at the partner institutions. We have places in the USA, Australia, Germany, Norway, Canada, Malaysia, South Korea, Hungary and France.

We're committed to offering inclusive international opportunities. Through the Turing Scheme and our overall widening participation focus, we ensure all eligible students can access study or work experiences abroad.

Enhanced support is available for:

  • Students from lower-income households
  • Disabled students and those with special educational needs
  • Care-experienced or estranged students.

Study abroad opportunities

Sunderland Abroad allows you to study for one or two semesters of your second year at one of our exchange partners.

Depending on your course, you can:

  • Study abroad for one semester, and the credits earned will replace one semester of study at Sunderland
  • Spend a full academic year at one of our partner institutions
  • Study abroad on a short-term programme, ideal for summer or winter breaks. These programmes typically range from two weeks to three months, often combining study, volunteering or internships abroad.

Turing Scheme

Students on eligible courses can take up exciting opportunities for overseas study placements and work placements, traineeships or internships through funding provided by the UK Government's Turing Scheme.
