This Master of Education (Health Professions Education) course enables you to study a wide range of topics relevant to educating tomorrow’s health professionals. The course provides initial teacher preparation for staff new to education, with modules covering both teaching, learning, assessment and curriculum design.
Later modules cover leading course provision and dealing with student success, retention, attainment and managing complex issues including fitness to practise. By undertaking this master's degree, you'll examine an aspect of pedagogical practice in detail using educational research methods.
This part-time course uses a mix of lectures, group-based seminars and interactive workshop activities, and action learning sets. Online quizzes and self-directed learning will also support your student learning experience.
You'll be assessed using multiple methods reflecting the underpinning principles of universal design for learning, including essay format, a spoken individual presentation, written module document and verbal defence, reflective account, presentation, written research proposal, and an independent project report.
We require applicants to hold at least a 2:2 honours degree. Applicants must be in a role that includes a full range of academic responsibilities in line with the UK Professional Standards Framework dimensions and includes at least 100 hours of face-to-face scheduled teaching each year.
University of Sunderland staff will apply via the HR staff qualifications policy agreeing workload remission and support with their line manager.
This course is suitable for applicants to enter with advanced standing (e.g. APL). APL is permitted for up to 30% of the course (60 credits). APL will normally be applied against the modules in the Postgraduate Certificate, usually because the applicant holds a Postgraduate Certificate of equivalence. Normal University processes of mapping learning outcomes will be applied. APL is permitted only where all of the course learning outcomes to the level of a particular exit award have been met.

The tuition fee for this course is £3,750 per year if you're from the UK/Ireland/EU settled/pre-settled.
This part-time course isn't available to international students who require a student visa to study in the UK.

This course is aimed at registered health professionals working to the relevant regulators Standards of Performance Conduct and Ethics. You'll have secured employment in Higher Education or be seeking to work in supporting health professions education in the university or clinical setting. The course is designed to develop your skills and knowledge as a teaching professional and as such, be able to offer student centred teaching and learning experiences.
