Our biological sciences courses are based in The John Dawson Sciences Complex and Helen McArdle House at City Campus. They boast excellent laboratories and cutting-edge equipment thanks to multi-million pound investments.
Pure tone audiometry skills are introduced and developed using OTIS software which can realistically simulate a wide range of patient types and hearing loss pathologies.
Once pure tone audiometry skills have been developed, you'll use Kamplex AD226 pure tone audiometers and AT235 tympanometers to test and assess patient volunteers in readiness for clinical placement.
The anatomy of the ear will be viewed directly using a VIOT video otoscope system which allows you to view live images of tympanic membranes and external ear canals.
We use Affinity systems which allow you to gain experience and clinical skills in Pure Tone Audiometry, Real Ear Measurement and Digital Hearing Aid fitting to prescription targets. This type of equipment is widely used in NHS clinics throughout the UK.
You'll use the latest GE Healthcare ECG machines to train in performing 12 Lead ECGs on volunteers from our Patient Carers and Public Involvement (PCPI) Group.
In Year 2 you'll benefit from our dedicated Holter Analysis Laboratory equipped with six Spacelabs Pathfinder Holter Analyzers and a full library of interesting cases.
In Year 3 you'll be able to use both simulation and real world equipment to develop your advancing skills. The incorporation of our new CAE Cath Lab VR system alongside our Immersive Suite allows for the recreation of realistic invasive cardiology environments. And the use of the Heartworks Transthoracic Echocardiogram Simulator will develop your initial skills in echocardiography. Alongside real-world echocardiography equipment you'll have the opportunity of extending those initial skills developed through simulation into ones that can prepare you for the next stages of your career.
Simulation manikins help you build confidence and develop clinical skills in a realistic but safe environment.
Our manikins range from various SimMan patient simulators (SimMan 3G, SimMan ALS, Sim Junior and Sim Baby to name a few) to CAE Apollo and Caesar manikins, to anatomically realistic SimBodies and lower-fidelity simulation manikins.
SimMan and Apollo manikins can demonstrate realistic physiological behaviour, including blood pressure, a pulse, drug recognition technology (in SimMan 3G), and each model can be pre-programmed with various medical scenarios.
