Why Sunderland for Education and Teacher Training

We offer both undergraduate and postgraduate initial teacher training courses in primary and secondary education. All of our courses lead to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), so you’ll be ready to teach in any state-maintained school in England as soon as you graduate.

Our undergraduate teacher training degrees are typically three years full-time, while our PGCE courses are one-year postgraduate qualifications. If you're interested in secondary teaching, many of our courses are subject-specific, so you can focus on the subject you're passionate about. These courses often come with generous funding opportunities.

We also offer opportunities for school-based teacher training through the PGCE Primary Education with QTS (School-Based) and SCITT PgCert, which focus on training while you teach.

Our postgraduate distance learning courses in education are available in over 60 countries, giving you the opportunity to study from wherever you are in the world. These include International Initial Teacher Training degrees for those who are new to teaching, as well as Professional Development courses designed for experienced teachers and education professionals looking to deepen their expertise.

If you're aiming to teach in sixth forms, Further Education (FE) colleges, adult education, or vocational training, our PGCE Further Education and Skills could be the perfect next step. This course is a full-time, one-year degree ideal for those with no prior teaching experience.

Our Professional Development courses are post-qualifying master’s degrees in education, designed for those who already have experience in the field. Unlike our teacher training degrees, these courses won’t qualify you to teach – but they’re ideal if you’re looking to deepen your expertise, progress in your current role, or explore new career opportunities in education.

These specialised degrees are particularly valuable for practising educators – whether you work in the classroom or in wider educational settings. Many of our students are experienced professionals looking to enhance their knowledge and career prospects, though some courses may also be suitable for recent graduates with relevant experience.
