What is SCITT?
SCITT is an established, school-based route into teaching, with programmes delivered by government-accredited networks of schools. You'll focus on training as you teach and upon completion, be recommended for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) through your provider.
Alongside your teacher training, you'll develop an understanding of research and policy to link theory with practice – seeing the links between educational research and its practical application in classrooms.
The SCITT PgCert
We partner with SCITT providers to deliver a 60-credit Postgraduate Certificate of Education (PgCert) to complement the award of QTS. The PgCert is made up of two Level 7 modules:
- Module 1 explores school-based interventions and how they're used to develop students' learning
- Module 2 allows you to carry out a negotiated individual study on teaching in your own classroom.
These modules can be used to apply for direct entry onto Year 2 of the MA Education course.
You'll explore the modules through live sessions with your SCITT provider or online, and you'll have access to teaching and learning materials via Canvas, our Virtual Learning Environment. You'll also be assigned a Personal Academic Tutor who'll monitor your progress and assess your assignments.
Trainees are enrolled as postgraduate students with the University, so you'll have full access to the library and other support services.
How do I apply?
There's no direct entry onto this course – you must be accepted onto a SCITT programme with one of the teacher training providers we work with. Currently, this is Gorse SCITT(opens in new tab), which covers the Yorkshire region.
Use the DfE Get into Teaching website(opens in new tab) to find a school-centred or other teacher training route suitable for you.
