What is Film School?
Sunderland Film School is designed for students with a passion for film, media, performance, or storytelling
Ideally, you'll be studying a film, media, or performance-related subject. Or, you could be considering further study or a future career in a creative industry
However, we’re not expecting you to come with lots of experience; the purpose of Film School is for everyone to learn new skills together.
During the main week of Sunderland Film School, you’ll work with professional producer and director Craig Conway (Trash TV 2025, No Way Home 2023). You'll get hands-on behind the camera and bring your ideas to life in your very own short film. The week includes filming days where you will take on a range of roles. These may include the camera, sound and directing departments or editing workshops and foley sessions. You'll get the chance to work with actors and even have the opportunity to appear in the film yourself. The week culminates in an exclusive film premiere, celebrating the hard work and creativity of everyone involved.
Prior to the main week in June, we have a series of other events to gain insight into pre-production. You'll take part in writing workshops and learn some of the basics ahead of filming in June. We ask that participants demonstrate enthusiasm, commitment and attend all scheduled activities.

Planned sessions
Online Launch
Wednesday, 20 January 2027, 5pm to 6pm.
This online session is streamed live from our university TV studio. Anyone accepted onto the Film School will be invited to watch online to get key information about the week and ask any questions they might have.
Writers Room
Wednesday, 3 March 2027, 2pm to 5pm.
This on-campus session gives participants an exclusive first look at the script. You'll get the opportunity to contribute ideas and feedback. Also, you can begin planning for the Sunderland Film School experience.
It’s also a great chance to meet everyone involved for the first time, pick up your Film School t-shirt and become familiar with the campus.
Pre-Filming Session
Wednesday, 2 June 2027, 10am to 4pm.
This on-campus session is an introduction to production and filming. The first part of the day will look at some of the roles inside the production office and preparation for a filming day. The afternoon will involve practical sessions. These involve getting used to the different types of equipment and understanding how to use them in filming.
Depending on the script, we might use this day to shoot one of the scenes in the film.
If you have a problem with one of the dates but are really keen to be part of the Film School, please reach out. We can discuss this on a case-by-case basis. Contact a member of the team at filmschool@sunderland.ac.uk(opens in new tab).
