Course summary

Occupational therapists work with people of all ages to enable participation in the 'occupations' that they want and need to do. An occupation is any type of meaningful activity we do in our everyday lives. This includes going to work, leisure activities, and looking after ourselves. Across a lifetime, ability, a condition, an illness, an injury, or state of mind can affect participation in activities. Occupational therapists help by modifying activities, teaching new skills or strategies, adapting the environment, or a combination of these.

You can complete your Occupational Therapy degree in two years with our accelerated course.

You'll learn from people who'll share with you their lived experiences of health and social care services. These are our Patient, Carer and Public Involvement (PCPI) participants. Their integration in the course will contribute to your learning through assessment and feedback in a safe learning environment. This will develop your confidence and competence before you go out on placement.

Your teaching will take place in multi-media classrooms with state-of-the-art resources for learning. These include a simulation flat, creative activities room, telecare facilities and a therapeutic garden. You'll collaborate with students from other health-related degrees through interprofessional learning sessions. This includes trainee physiotherapists, nurses, pharmacists, paramedics, doctors, sports scientists, social workers, and psychologists.

Upon graduation, you'll be eligible to apply for registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) as a graduate occupational therapist. You can also apply for professional membership of the Royal College of Occupational Therapists (RCOT).

Please note that completing an approved course does not guarantee you'll become registered as an occupational therapist with the HCPC. It shows that you meet the minimum professional standards and are eligible to apply for registration. The HCPC will request additional information from you so that they can verify your eligibility. Please refer to the HCPC website for further information.

The staff at the university were so welcoming, I could already feel a sense of support and comfort as soon as I stepped through the door, this made me feel at ease as I was so nervous as you can expect.

What you'll study

Many of our courses include a range of modules you can choose from. Some of these options may only be available if you’ve already studied specific required modules. If you’re not sure what you need before picking a module, your course leader can help.

Undergraduate module credits should total 120 credits per academic year. If optional modules are available alongside core modules on your course, you should choose an amount that totals 120 credits.

How you'll learn

You'll learn from a skilled and motivated team of lecturers, visiting practitioners, and PCPIs. Teaching methods include online lectures, seminars and workshops. There may also be off-campus teaching sessions in public facilities such as swimming pools or the beach.

There will be a mixture of group work and problem-based learning sessions, as well as resources on virtual learning platforms. Your personal tutor will support you throughout and you can arrange one-to-one or group tutorials with them.

Assessment is through written assignments, presentations, demonstrations and observed, structured, practical assessments (OSPA). During your practice placement you'll be assessed by a Practice Placement Educator.

Your placements form a significant part of this course. You'll complete a minimum of 1000 hours practice placement. During your placement you'll benefit from supervision from a Practice Placement Educator as well as support from academic staff. You may be required to work an altered shift pattern and may be required to work weekends. Placements can take place anywhere in the north-east region and some may take place outside of the normal university calendar.

The course operates over the same number of academic weeks as a three-year course. However, there are fewer holiday weeks which enables you to complete it over a shorter time. Towards the end of the course, to help you transition from academic life to work life, you'll study come modules during your placement. This is to imitate how staff in practice undertake their continuous professional development.
