About Andrew Ward
I am a Senior Lecturer in Healthcare Sciences: Life Science and Programme Leader for BSc Healthcare Science Practitioner (Life).
I am a Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) registered Biomedical Scientist and have 30 years of experience working in NHS diagnostic laboratories.
During this time, I have mentored many trainee Biomedical Scientists, MSc students, and those undertaking the IBMS Specialist Portfolio. I am an IBMS Registration Portfolio External Assessor.
More recently, I was the national programme lead for microbiology/infection control training for Anatomical Pathology Technologists (APTs) and was an associate specialist lecturer in Biomedical Science at Teesside University.
For 18 years, I was employed as Senior Biomedical Scientist in Microbiology at North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust, working for the NHS since 1993.
My experience and knowledge are in the fields of clinical diagnostic microbiology, antimicrobial testing, and Infection, Prevention and Control.
I am a registered Chartered Scientist and also a Chartered Manager.
Teaching and supervision
I teach on the BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science and the Diploma in Healthcare Science (Apprenticeship).
I am the module leader for the Healthcare Science (Life) apprenticeship placement module HCS230, the apprenticeship healthcare science research investigation HCS326, and HCA102 Healthcare Science Associate Work-Based Learning Module, Year 1.
Research
My areas of research have covered the use of novel microbial therapeutics, Clostridioides difficile, investigating new hospital disinfection technologies and leadership and motivation in an NHS diagnostic laboratory.
