About John Below
I originally trained as a secondary mathematics teacher and taught in the north-east for many years before joining the University some considerable time ago. It has been very satisfying to hear positive feedback from former trainees and other teachers when I was visiting schools about how effective former Sunderland trainees now are as practising teachers.
In addition to my work as a teacher and lecturer, I was also a senior A Level examiner for both Mathematics and General Studies for many years.
Teaching and supervision
I was previously, at various times, Programme Leader for PGCE Secondary Education in Mathematics with QTS and the BSc (Hons) Mathematics Education with QTS programme. I retired in 2023 but continue to provide mathematics subject input for the International PGCE programme.
Further information
In recent years I have had a number of articles published by the Mathematical Association, now AMiE, in Mathematical Angles and Mathematics in School, some focused on recreational mathematics and others on mathematics pedagogy.
