Course summary

Turn your passion for maths into a rewarding teaching career by studying the BSc (Hons) Mathematics Education with QTS course. This is a fast-track, three-year degree that qualifies you to teach maths in secondary schools or colleges. Whether you're coming straight from studying maths or changing careers, this course supports your development of both subject knowledge and teaching expertise.

You’ll build a deep understanding of school-level mathematics and how to teach it effectively, while exploring the challenges young people face in learning the subject. With at least 120 days spent on placement in schools and colleges, you’ll gain valuable, hands-on experience to prepare you for the classroom.

This degree awards Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), so upon successful completion, you’ll be fully qualified to teach in any state-maintained school in England. With a national shortage of maths teachers, your skills will be in high demand – and most graduates go into teaching roles after they graduate.

Laura Moss

My favourite part of the course was delving deeper into the art of teaching and discovering how students learn. Although it hasn’t been easy, I achieved a First Class Honours degree and was offered a teaching job with my second placement school.

What you'll study

Many of our courses include a range of modules you can choose from. Some of these options may only be available if you’ve already studied specific required modules. If you’re not sure what you need before picking a module, your course leader can help.

Undergraduate module credits should total 120 credits per academic year. If optional modules are available alongside core modules on your course, you should choose an amount that totals 120 credits.

How you'll learn

The course is taught via lectures, tutorials, seminars, and independent learning.

Throughout the degree you'll have one-to-one support from academic staff, whilst you study a combination of professional studies and mathematics at school level. This will involve a short, two week, non-assessed school experience, in each of the first two years, followed by an assessed teaching experience in your final year.

Alongside school experiences, you'll learn how to teach key mathematical concepts, identifying common errors and misconceptions, and consider educational issues in teaching maths.

Your progress will be assessed with reports, exams, presentations, and computer-based assessments.
