About Scott Rowan-Ferry
I am a Senior Lecturer in the School of Nursing and Health Sciences at the University of Sunderland and a Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) registered Biomedical Scientist with over seven years' experience working within the NHS. I am Programme Lead for Integrated Foundation Year (IFY) Biosciences, where I lead the development and delivery of an inclusive curriculum that supports students from diverse educational backgrounds in their transition to higher education.
Before starting at the University, I spent several years as a Biomedical Scientist before becoming a Transfusion Practitioner at Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. My professional expertise lies in blood sciences, particularly transfusion practice, alongside the development of simulation-based learning and innovative laboratory teaching within higher education.
Alongside my teaching and programme leadership responsibilities, I lead transnational education partnerships in Biomedical Sciences and have a strong interest in widening participation, student belonging, and the Foundation Year experience. I was recently elected to the Foundation Year Network Executive Committee, where I contribute to the national development of Foundation Year education, working collaboratively with colleagues across the UK to promote evidence-informed practice, student success, and sector-wide innovation.
Teaching and supervision
I teach on theĀ BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science course, and I am Programme Leader for the BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science with Integrated Foundation Year.
Research
My areas of interest and research include preparing students for the fast-paced nature of a biomedical scientist in the NHS and industry.
