Faculty of Business, Law and Tourism

The Faculty of Business, Law and Tourism is home to Sunderland Business School and Sunderland Law School, with key areas of teaching including business and management, hospitality and events, aviation and tourism, and law.

Teaching is structured to support the individual development of each student as they pursue their own creative vision and our academics are active practitioners and researchers, working nationally and internationally within the creative and academic sectors. We also welcome a wide range of visiting professors who are experts in their field and regularly work with our students.

We have world-leading areas of research, including the Centre for Tourism Research Excellence (CERTE) and cutting edge knowledge in the areas of Productivity and Innovation, Social Justice and Business Pedagogy. These underpin our teaching and connect us with business through a range of research and consultancy projects. We are proud to provide our diverse student population with strong learning experiences and recognise the successes of many of our global alumni.

School of Hospitality, Events, Aviation and Tourism

We deliver world-class research and have some of the highest student satisfaction programmes in the UK, as indicated by the National Student Survey. Our courses provide exceptional opportunities for students to experience a number of world destinations and get involved with a range of ‘live’ projects.

We work with leading organisations to deliver a range of experiences to enhance students’ CVs. An example of this includes the highly rated Blackfriars restaurant, where students study gastronomy. These experiences are complemented by a range of field trips, where students have the opportunity to travel widely to study industry and commerce in context. Previous trips include New York, Hong Kong, Prague, Paris and Barcelona. There are also Study Abroad and placement opportunities where students can work with leading organisations such as Disney and White Lodgings in the USA.

Sunderland Law School

We provide our Law students with an applied curriculum where they can undertake a range of activities as part of their studies in order to develop strong employability. Such activities include mooting and client interviewing competitions (which are supported by academics), work placements and working for the Sunderland Law Clinic. The Clinic has delivered hugely beneficial service to the community with pro bono work across a wide range of cases, where students work under the close supervision of qualified solicitors to complete a portfolio of work within an assessed module.

Whilst much of the teaching is delivered by practitioners, this is underpinned by active research input, with the Centre for Social Justice working to research a range of current challenges within the professional and through a multi-agency and interdisciplinary perspective. The School routinely works with representatives from a range of regional Law firms, who help to provide guidance to students on career direction and aspects of professional identity.

Sunderland Business School

Our Business courses range from accounting, banking, economics and finance to human resources, management and marketing. Many of our courses are supported by professional accreditations and these include ACCA (Accounting) CIM (Marketing) CIMA (Accounting) CIPD (Human Resources) and CMI (Management). We are also proud to subscribe to the Principles of Responsibility of Management in Education (PRiME) and hold memberships with the Chartered Association of Business Schools (CABS), the European Foundation for Management Development (EFMD) and the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB).

Research themes are clustered under the areas of Tourism, Business Pedagogy, and Productivity and Innovation. These themes support the content, teaching and learning approaches across our courses. Teaching innovation challenges students to undertake new experiences such as simulations based on real-life scenarios through which they can bring the subject to life and build their skillset in readiness for employability.

Sunderland Business School also offers a range of advice and consultancy support services for local and national businesses and this maintains crucial ties with the commercial sector. Expert solutions are offered in areas such as; cultural compliance, digital marketing, accountancy, human resource management strategy and operations management.
