Lecturer in Public Health
I am a Lecturer in Public Health, Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA), and hold a PhD and Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education (PGCert). With years of experience in teaching and supervising students, I deliver modules across the MSc Public Health and BSc (Hons) Public Health Practitioner Degree Apprenticeship programmes.
My research interests include integrated health promotion, health inequalities, and climate resilience. Prior to academia, I served as a Scientific and Public Health Officer at Nigeria’s Ministry of Health. I am a recipient of multiple prestigious awards, including the President’s NYSC Honours’ Award (Nigeria’s highest youth award), the State Honours’ Award, and the University of Sunderland’s Plus Award for outstanding student support.
Teaching and supervision
I teach BSc (Hons) Public Health Practitioner Degree Apprenticeship and MSc Public Health.
I supervise MSc Public Health dissertations and I am currently module leader for:
- HSSM72 – Social Determinants of Global Health and Health Systems
- PHP301 – Green Policy Versus Economic Reality: Clean Air For All
Research interests for potential research students
My core interests are air quality, respiratory health (diseases), environmental and health inequalities, global health with a special interest in neglected tropical diseases, and cardiopulmonary diseases.

Research
Currently my research is the intersection of air quality and public health with focus on assessing the health impacts of air pollution, investigating disparities in air pollution exposure and their effects on vulnerable populations, ethnic minorities and developing countries. Exploring the links between climate change, air quality, and public health outcomes and evaluating the effectiveness of public health interventions and air quality policies.

Dr Christabel O Ihedike

- Dr. Ihedike adopts an inclusive, evidence-based, and practice-informed teaching approach. Her pedagogical interests focus on engaging diverse learners through real-world problem-solving, critical reflection, and interprofessional collaboration. Teaching responsibilities have included modules on Global health and social determinant of health, epidemiology, Public health research methods, and applied public health interventions. She is also actively involved in and student support initiatives within her School/department.
Dr. Ihedike is committed to fostering academic excellence, professional readiness, and lifelong learning in students. Through reflective practice, mentorship, and research-led teaching, they contribute to shaping future public health leaders equipped to address complex health issues across diverse populations.
