Lecturer in Paramedic Science and Out of Hospital Care

I am a registered HCPC paramedic, with five years experience in emergency pre-hospital care. I have completed additional training in trauma care (PHTLS) and mentoring. I still work clinically for the North East Ambulance Service as an ambulance paramedic.

I am currently studying for a master's degree at Newcastle University. The master's degree is a three-year course that has been funded through NIHR. The course is a MClinRes (Master's of Clinical Research).

I have been teaching in higher education since 2021 and I have completed my PGCE (HE). I teach on BSc (Hons) Paramedic Science and Out of Hospital Care with a specialisation in research in paramedic science.

Lastly, I am an army reservist, currently working as a combat medic technician (reservist) with 5 Royal Regiment Fusiliers (5RRF) (Reserves) in the North East of England.

Research interests for potential research students

My research mission is reducing health inequalities in pre-hospital emergency care by improving pre-hospital care around the world through high-quality research.

I have a particular interest in the role of technology, especially drone technology to augment the pre-hospital response to cardiac arrest around the world.

Current projects:

  • Exploring the differences between rural and urban emergency pre-hospital care in the North East of England
  • Investigating stroke care in care home populations in the North East of England
  • Use of drones in pre-hospital care, with a focus on remote and rural areas
  • International EMS systems and creating international paramedic exchange programmes
  • Exploring mental wellbeing in first-year student paramedics after exposure to ambulance placement
