Environmental Sustainability Plan

This plan covers our activities within the UK, and then overseas as our sustainability plans and processes develop. It outlines our intent to reduce our direct and indirect environmental impacts and contribute to sustainable development for our community and wider society.

"The University is acutely aware of the potential environmental impact of its activities and aims to ensure that these are managed in a sustainable way, having due regard to environmental, social, and economic considerations. Guided by our ambitions, which are to be student-focused, professions-facing, and society-shaping, we'll ensure that sustainability is embedded in all aspects of our university, from our built environment, through to the resources we use, and the courses we deliver." Ben Dale, Chief Financial Officer and Executive Lead for Environmental Sustainability.

We introduced our previous Environmental Sustainability Plan in 2020.

Since we published the previous plan, we've:

  • Invested in energy efficiency, which has resulted in annual financial savings of around £750,000
  • Established a new Environmental Sustainability Team
  • Rolled out a new Environmental Management System and achieved the Eco Campus Silver rating
  • Been shortlisted for the first time in the prestigious Green Gown Awards
  • Put firm foundations in place to be able to launch a University-wide Education for Sustainable Development framework later in 2025.

We also have almost 500 staff and students taking part in sustainability events, such as litter picks, Dr Bike sessions, and volunteering at the community garden each year.

This 2025-2030 plan builds on this success and is an integral part of the University 2025-2030 Strategy, supporting both the Infrastructure Plan and Student Success Plan.

2030 measures of success

We've divided the plan into six key themes. For each of the themes, we've set a measure of success for 2030 to provide objective and quantifiable measures of performance. This enables us to monitor and report against progress.

Strategic Environmental Sustainability Group (SESG)

The SESG was formed in 2020 to drive and coordinate a refreshed sustainability agenda across the University and oversee the delivery of the Environmental Sustainability Plan.

Chaired by the Director of Estates and Facilities and featuring representation from across the University, including professionals in Finance, Estates and Facilities, and Procurement, as well as academics and the Students’ Union, the group provides governance and oversight of our sustainability planning and delivery.

The group has responsibilities for the development of the Environmental Sustainability Action Plan, for the formation of the subgroups for each of the six sustainability themes, and for monitoring performance against this plan. The SESG will ensure an annual report is produced every year to report against the delivery of the action plan. The SESG and the University Operations Board will approve the annual reports.

The SESG provides senior-level support to progress the many facets of this plan and helps overcome potential barriers and bottlenecks in delivery against the programme.
