Are you into news, content creation, or looking to sharpen your media skills? BBC Verify on Tour will be teaming up with the University to give young people the ultimate toolkit to take on the world of media, fake news, and viral hype.
BBC Verify is a specialist division of BBC News made up of journalists who use verification tools to check the accuracy of information, images, and videos – helping to prevent the spread of misinformation. It focuses on fact-checking, transparency, and clearly showing the sources behind the facts, alongside regular news reporting.
Whether you’re scrolling TikTok, watching the news, or deep into your group chat debates, this event will teach you how to spot the truth, challenge the bias, and become a smarter digital citizen.
The event will be hosted by BBC Radio Tees presenter, and University of Sunderland graduate Emma Millen.
The on-campus event is now at capacity; however, you can still sign up to watch the live-streamed sessions, streamed directly from our newly refurbished, state-of-the-art cinema.
The sessions include:
- Trusted News – masterclass with Paul Brown at BBC Verify
- Career panel and Q&A live hosted by Emma Millen – hear from graduates Harry Roy (BBC Sports Radio Journalist), Callum Rowe (Freelance Journalist and Radio Producer and Presenter), Grace Stewart Piercy (founder of radio show interviewing impressive North Women). Our graduates will also be joined by an apprentice working at for BBC.
- Sunderland ‘Til I Die – join director Ben Riad and series producer David Soutar in their discussion around storytelling, connecting with an audience and the importance of trust when filming a documentary.
Please email student.recruitment@sunderland.ac.uk if you wish to be added to the waitlist for the on-campus event, which includes the in-person experience, plus two additional workshops delivered by University of Sunderland and BBC Verify.
