Community Lecture: The Roker Pier Project

Home / Events / Event
Roker Pier

A journey into the past when we learn more about our iconic landmark and the man who made it happen - Henry Wake - Sunderland's unsung hero.

Hear from Lynder Mathieson, Steve Breeze and Stuart Robson.

Lynder Mathieson has long been passionate about local history and believes that those who had a huge impact on the development of the city should be celebrated. For that reason she became a tour guide, sharing the stories of its creation and the man who made it possible known to others.

Steve Breeze has always had a passion for local history. He comes from an engineering background and the Industrial Revolution along with the great engineers of that period have always fascinated him.

Stuart Robson has a very personal connection with Roker Pier because his great grandfather Ralph Scott worked as a diver on the project which gave him a passion to become a guide, to relate his stories to the construction of the Pier and Lighthouse, and to ensure that the history of this iconic Sunderland Victorian structure is not lost.
