Join us on campus for a fantastic workshop tailored to your chosen creative pathway and take part in the launch of the 2023 Orwell Youth Prize.
The Orwell Foundation are coming to Sunderland to join in our celebration of the life of Orwell's first wife, Eileen O'Shaughnessy, who went to school here. Eileen went on to influence and edit his best-known works, such as Animal Farm and Nineteen Eight-Four.
The University of Sunderland and the Orwell Youth Prize will be hosting a day of interactive workshops, across a range of creative sessions, responding to the 2023 Orwell Youth Prize theme, which will be announced on the day. The day will culminate in group presentations to local influencers. Participants will also get the chance to ask questions to Orwell’s son, Richard Blair, in a press conference set-up. Students will experience a day on a university campus, get an introduction to Orwell’s work, and be inspired and supported to enter the Orwell Youth Prize.
Students will have the opportunity to take part in one of five interactive sessions to develop their creative skills that will also feed into their GCSE and A Level studies. The workshops are as follows:
- English- Flash Fiction
- Journalism- writing a news feature
- Film and Media- Scriptwriting
- Game Design
- Art- creative work inspired by Orwell
During this the winner of The Orwells and the Legacy of 1984 will receive their prize and the new Orwell Youth Prize will launch.
