How do I pay my rent?

Home / Help and advice / Accommodation / Applying for accommodation / How do I pay my rent?

You can pay your rent in the following ways:

  • By debit/credit card visit the University Electronic Gateway
  • By a recurring debit/credit card arrangement over the three instalments (other payment patterns may be available, ask us about them at Accommodation Services on 0191 515 2943)
  • By bank transfer using your online banking function or via international payment
  • Any resident queries on rent charges should be directed to the Accommodation Office on 0191 515 2943. Resident queries on how to pay should be directed to Revenues on 0191 515 2455

If you are living in accommodation not provided by the University, your tenancy agreement will describe how to pay your rent as well as when payments are expected.

Request to see the contract and all terms and conditions before signing it. Ensure that you have read and understood the tenancy agreement fully. Important information to understand is:

  • When you can move in and when you are expected to move out.
  • How much the rent is and when you should make payments
  • What your rent includes, such as rent only, or bills for Wi-Fi, gas, electricity, and water included.
  • Who owns the property and their contact information such as address and phone number.
  • Who is managing your accommodation, such as a letting agent, and their contact information.
  • How to report repairs including emergencies outside of normal hours.
  • What work is agreed to take place before you move in.
  • If this is a joint tenancy with other parties, as you are jointly liable for the costs of the whole property and not just your portion. If a co-tenant fails to make payments, you (and your guarantor if you have one) can be legally pursued for these costs.
  • Which areas of the property you have exclusive possession of, and which areas are shared.
  • A list of what furniture is provided.

It is also recommended you have viewed the property before you sign the agreement.
