What’s included in my rent?

Home / Help and advice / Accommodation / Applying for accommodation / What’s included in my rent?

Your rent price includes all of your utility bills (heating, cooking, electricity, water, and internet). As you’re living in student accommodation you don’t need to pay council tax.

There is also 24/7 security, free car parking, on-site laundry facilities, on-site student support from dedicated Resident Assistants, and contents insurance provided by Endsleigh.

You’ll benefit from travel via the campus bus to your study location with the use of your student campus card. A weekly cleaning service is also available for your kitchen, bathroom, and communal areas (does not include Scotia Quay en-suite).

If you are living in accommodation provided by a private landlord or a letting agent, your tenancy agreement will specify what is included in your rent, which may or may not include bills.

We recommend that your accommodation provides:

  • Heating with clear instructions on how to use it.
  • Secure door locks fitted to all external doors which meet the minimum British Standard.
  • Windows that close securely.
  • Adequate smoke and fire detection for the property specifications. For example, for a house, there must be one smoke detector on each floor of the property.
  • All fixtures and fittings must meet the British Fire Standard.
  • A carbon monoxide alarm (in any room where solid fuel is used).

If you are unsure if your property has these amenities, we recommend you ask the landlord or letting agent before you sign the tenancy agreement.

Some rental fees are prohibited by law. This means that a landlord or letting agent cannot charge you for fees such as tenancy set-up fees, admin fees, inventory fees, check-in and check-out fees, and fees for viewing the property.

Research online for information on what fees you can and cannot be charged.
