The University of Sunderland’s work with the Aldrin Family Foundation has been recognised for inspiring schoolchildren to become interested in space science and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) subjects.

The University and the Aldrin Family Foundation, led by Dr Andrew Aldrin, formed the UK’s first Space Learning Hub, delivering space-themed STEMM education to over 2,000 pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds across the north-east. Through Giant Moon Maps™, LEGO® SPIKE™ kits, and expert-led sessions, the programme inspires primary pupils to explore space careers and higher education.

The partnership received a national commendation for the NEON Widening Access Partnership Award, which was presented by Dr Adam Thompson MP, chair of the All-Party Parliamentary University Group, at the Palace of Westminster in London.

The NEON Awards celebrate the successes and accomplishments of individuals and institutions in supporting learners from underrepresented groups to access and succeed within higher education.

Katharine Reed, Widening Access and Participation Manager at the University of Sunderland, said: “Our evaluation results demonstrate the impact of the partnership and its effect on shaping future aspirations.

“Working with the Aldrin Family Foundation has allowed us access to extensive global expertise and networks resulting in collaborations with space industry leaders RTC North, Lockheed Martin, the National Space Academy, and Viasat, as well as other space educators and schools.

“To receive a commendation is testament to all the work that we’ve achieved through our partnership with the Aldrin Family Foundation.”
