Student filmmakers from the University of Sunderland are set to raise awareness about the issue of stalking through a series of short films.

The Police Short Film Awards project is a partnership between the office of the Northumbria Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) and the University of Sunderland, which raises awareness about issues impacting society through films created by final year Screen PerformancePerforming Arts and Film Production students.

Over the last 13 years, the projects have addressed challenging issues like county line drug crime, knife crime, male rape, modern-day slavery, domestic violence, cybercrime and hate crime.

This year, students have been asked by the office of Northumbria PCC to look at the issue of stalking and its impact on victims and their families and friends.

Dr Adelle Hulsmeier, Associate Professor of Partnerships and Participatory Practice at the University, said: “We are thrilled to be working on behalf of Northumbria Police and the PCC's office to address the issue of stalking.

“Having worked on this project and strengthened our educational partnership with the PCC's office for the past 13 years, we are elated that the students are yet again tackling another important issue that has purpose and prevalence for the wider community.

“The partnership really reflects what the University strives for in strengthening collaboration and community. Students are now thoroughly underway working passionately on this year's themes, and we are already looking forward to screening and celebrating their work in February.”

These short films will be screened before an audience of invited delegates, family and friends, in celebration of the hard work and dedication behind their creation on Tuesday 17 February 2026 from 7pm at the Tom Cowie Lecture Theatre, Prospect Building, St Peter's Campus.

Students will also be up for a chance to win the Police Short Film Award given to students who produce the best film selected by Northumbria Police and Crime Commissioner, Susan Dungworth.

Susan said: “I am pleased to see students at Sunderland taking on another important topic. Stalking is a serious and often hidden crime that often goes under-reported.

“By shining a light on what stalking looks like, these films can be used to help people recognise early signs and give victims the confidence to come forward. The skill and creativity of the students never disappoints, and I look forward to seeing how they bring this issue to life to help raise awareness.”
