The University of Sunderland has been named as a finalist in the 2025 North East Apprenticeship Awards in the Training Provider/Programme of the Year category, recognising the University’s work in supporting the outstanding apprenticeship network thriving across the region.

With around twenty different apprenticeship programmes spanning all Faculties —from community and youth work to engineering and journalism — the University is a key advocate of the opportunities that studying on an apprenticeship programme at the University can bring.

This year, the Faculty of Business and Technology, supported by colleagues in Innovation & Skills are introducing a brand-new apprenticeship programme — MSc Professional People Practice (Apprenticeship) — starting in June 2025. This course is designed for those looking to develop their expertise in HR and people management while continuing to work.

The School of Education will also be launching a new route for the Teacher Degree Apprenticeship, aimed at individuals who don't already hold a degree and are looking for a career in Teaching.

Sarah Beck, Academic Director of Apprenticeships at the University of Sunderland, said: “This is a really exciting time for apprenticeships at the University of Sunderland. Over the past few years, our provision has gone from strength to strength as we deliver an increasing number of high-quality apprenticeship programmes which respond to the workforce development needs of employers across our region.

“Being named as a finalist in these prestigious awards is testament to the hard work of colleagues across the University, in partnership with a diverse range of businesses and organisations.”

The University launched its advanced, higher and degree apprenticeships programme in 2017. Starting with just a handful of employers, the University scheme has grown year on year, now partnering with more than 150 organisations.

There are currently just under 1,000 apprentices on an advanced, higher and degree apprenticeship programme covering a range of sectors and job roles, with over 340 enrolments so far this year.

The 2025 North East Apprenticeship Awards take place on 26 June.
