A participatory arts based project is underway to explore the concept of safety and what this means to people who have experienced difficulty in their lives related to mental health and/ or abuse and trauma.

Two groups have worked together to co-create artwork that reflects what safety means to them. The two pieces, titled “Peace in a bubble” and “Creating Sanctuary”, explore several themes representing what safety means to the creators. The workshops offered an inclusive space for people to share their views and ideas and to play with the materials, learning new art techniques to support the development of the pieces.

The art works will be on display in a few week’s time. We will be inviting people to view the artwork and respond to a series of questions (designed by the creators) to foster dynamic dialogue about what safety means to all of us and how we can all engage with and understand different perspectives on safety.

If you are interested in viewing the artwork please follow @SarahLonbay on Twitter for updates about the project, or email Sarah.Lonbay@sunderland.ac.uk for more information.

The project was funded by the UKRI participatory research fund, via the University of Sunderland and hosted by the Recovery College Collective (Recoco). Thank you to Recoco, to our research team, and to all of the creators who took part.
