Pre-16 Schools and Colleges Open Day

Join us for an immersive experience on Wednesday 9 April designed to give your Year 10 and 11 pupils a comprehensive understanding of all our university offers.

Explore our range of degrees by choosing from subject-specific workshops from art and design to medicine, and tour our state-of-the-art facilities. 

Pre-16 Schools and Colleges Open Day

Our experienced academics and current students will be on hand to provide valuable insights and answer any questions you or your pupils may have. You can also get guidance on student finance, student accommodation, and scholarships and bursaries from our support services.

Our Open Day will be split into two sessions, offering flexibility to accommodate your timetables. Choose between morning or afternoon sessions:

Morning session

Our morning Open Day will run from 9:30am–12:45pm.

Arrival 9:30am–9:45am

Staff and pupils can check-in, collect a programme, and find out more about the day.

Welcome talk 9:45am–10:15am

This session will allow everyone to meet our friendly Pre-16 team, learn more about studying at university, and ask any questions.

Subject demonstrations 10:30am–12:15pm

Our subject demonstrations will allow pupils to take part in interactive demos in a range of subjects. Schools can select two demos they are most interested in and will have time throughout the day to attend these.

Marketplace 10:30am–12:15pm

Pupils can visit our marketplace and explore our range of academic, extracurricular, and support services in this fun and dynamic space.

Afternoon session

Our afternoon Open Day will run from 11:30am–3pm.

Art and Design

For pupils interested in studying Animation; Fine Art; Fashion Design and Promotion; Graphic Design; and Illustration and Design.

  • Pop-Up Prints

Show us your artistic skills in our Pop-Up Prints demonstration where you can use our range of art and design facilities to create prints.

Biomedical Sciences

For pupils interested in studying Biomedical Science and Physiological Sciences.

  • Life in the Lab

Explore life in the lab in this demonstration from our Biomedical Science teams. Demonstrate the type of work Biomedical Scientists and Physiological Scientists undertake, using our industry-standard facilities.

Criminology

For pupils interested in studying Criminology.

  • Ranking Crimes by Severity

Analyse and rank crimes based on their impact on individuals and society. Criminal activity may include offenses such as theft, fraud, vandalism, assault, and cybercrimes. Justify your rankings by considering factors such as harm caused, intent, societal consequences, and legal penalties. This exercise encourages ethical reasoning, critical thinking, and discussion about justice and fairness.

Medicine

For pupils interested in studying MBChB Medicine.

  • Anatomy

Explore our Anatomy Centre, which offers digital and interactive anatomy facilities to help you visualise dissection, clinical imaging, and ultrasound. Using these facilities you can improve your depth perception, spatial orientation, and visualisation of body structures below the skin. 

Nursing and Midwifery

For pupils interested in studying Adult Nursing Practice; Mental Health Nursing Practice; Children's and Young People's Nursing Practice; and Midwifery Practice.

  • Care on a Hospital Ward

Visit our mock hospital wards to explore our industry-standard facilities and find out what it takes to provide excellent patient care.

Occupational Therapy

For pupils interested in studying BSc (Hons) Occupational Therapy Accelerated.

  • Living Well at Home: An Occupational Therapy Perspective

Our state-of-the-art mock flat simulates a real home environment, and in this session, students will see our Occupational Therapy teams demonstrating the things to consider when helping people live well at home.

Paramedic Science

For pupils interested in studying BSc (Hons) Paramedic Science and Out of Hospital Care.

  • Paramedic Relay

Students will have the opportunity to get hands-on experience with some of our paramedic equipment competing in a variety of tasks.

Pharmacy

For pupils interested in studying (MPharm) Pharmacy.

  • Demos in the dispensary

Visiting our dispensary, students will discover what it takes to be a successful pharmacist in this demonstration.

Physiotherapy

For pupils interested in studying BSc (Hons) Physiotherapy.

  • Exploring Anatomy through Movement

Our Physiotherapy teams will demonstrate how to explore anatomy through movement and the importance of physiotherapy to support this.

Psychology

For pupils interested in studying Psychology; Psychology with Counselling; Forensic Psychology; and Clinical Psychology.

  • Understanding the Brain

The brain is the most complex organ in our body, impacting our personalities, moods, actions, and dreams. In this session, students will hear from academics from our School of Psychology and explore our understanding of the brain through a range of theories and research.

Social Sciences

For pupils interested in studying Social Work; and Health, Wellbeing and Care in Society.

  • "Exploring the Social Care System" Interactive Game

Take part in an interactive game to explore the world of our social care system. Deep dive into the everyday realities and impactful work of social workers and health and social care, and see how you could make an impact on society through studying one of our courses.

Sport

For pupils interested in studying Sport and Exercise Science; Sport and Rehabilitation Therapy; and Sports Coaching and Physical Education.

  • Reaction Time: Hands vs Feet, and Gait Measurement: How Symmetrical are You?

In this demonstration from our Sports Science teams, students will examine the difference in reaction times between our hands and feet, as well as explore how our gait measurement affects our sports performance.

Teaching and Education

For pupils interested in studying Primary Education with QTS, Primary and SEND Education with QTS, Physical Education with QTS, Mathematics Education with QTS, Education Studies, and Childhood Studies.

  • Classroom Skills for Teaching

Visit our Education demo hub to explore key classroom skills for teaching, from primary level to subject-specific secondary teaching.

Childhood Studies

For pupils interested in studying BA (Hons) Childhood Studies.

  • Deconstructing Storybooks

Ever wondered why our favourite childhood stories stay in our minds long into adulthood? Find out in this session where our Childhood Studies team will deconstruct story books and the messages they convey.
