Read all about becoming a Student Ambassador or Digital Student Ambassador, where you can gain fantastic experience, develop skills, meet new people, and earn some money. It's a great way to support us in recruiting new students and representing the University.
Our dedicated Student Ambassadors support the Student Recruitment team, representing the University and assisting us throughout the recruitment cycle. Having been through the application process themselves, our students are the best people to inform prospective applicants about life on campus and are able to share their experience with those considering studying at Sunderland.
We also have our Digital Student Ambassadors, who share their university experience via our website and social media channels, including The Ambassador Platform (TAP)(opens in new tab). Our Digital Ambassadors have the opportunity to act as an ambassador for their subject area or course too, drawing on their personal experiences.
"Becoming a Student Ambassador has meant that I’ve had the opportunity to learn so many new skills and do fun, interesting things, such as getting to air on daytime radio and being invited to the House of Lords."
The work of a Student Ambassador is varied and may include:
Supporting on-campus events such as Open Days, school visits, and First Choice Summer School
Leading campus tours or individual visits
Attending schools and colleges
Attending Higher Education fairs
Sitting on student panels to participate in audience Q&As
Working with your faculty to talk about your course
Assisting with various marketing campaigns.
The role of a Digital Ambassador includes:
Creating a profile and responding to questions from prospective students or parents/carers on our instant messaging app
Creating content for our social media channels, usually in the form of photos or short videos to showcase all aspects of student life.
Being a Student Ambassador will enhance your personal and professional development by offering valuable work experience, where you'll expand your networking skills and improve your public speaking. If you're successful in joining the team, you'll also benefit from:
Paid casual work assignments
Flexibility to accept and decline assignments to suit your timetable
Representing the University at local and national events
Contributing to the University's widening participation agenda
The chance to meet other Student Ambassadors and join our community.
It's also a great way to earn some extra money if you were considering taking up a part-time job alongside your studying. The rate of pay is £12.60 per hour, plus holiday pay (correct at the time of publishing in February 2026).
Our Digital Ambassadors benefit from:
The opportunity to apply for additional assignments in the form of creative briefs, which could include offering advice on exam preparation, recommending gigs and shows, reviewing local restaurants, or creating blogs/vlogs to showcase student life at Sunderland
Flexibility to fit TAP chats around your timetable, with 24 hours to respond to requests
One hour pay per week at a rate of £12.31 per hour (inclusive of holiday pay).
