Course summary

The MBA (Sustainability) offers a focused route to develop your skills in sustainable business practices. Sustainability is a key challenge for today’s organisations, and this course prepares you to lead businesses with a strong understanding of environmental impact and responsible decision making.

This MBA prepares you for leadership roles in general management or specialised positions focused on environmental strategy and policy. You’ll learn to critically analyse environmental policies and create solutions that integrate sustainability into core business strategies.

Our curriculum has been designed in collaboration with employers to ensure you gain practical knowledge beyond textbooks. Throughout the course, you’ll meet business leaders who visit the University to share their insights. Past speakers include the Head of Sales and Marketing at Divine Chocolate and the CEO of Sunderland Football Club. These events provide valuable industry perspectives and networking opportunities, whether you're exploring career options or have a clear professional path.

An MBA is a respected and challenging qualification that can accelerate your career. Our graduates work across sectors worldwide and many have launched their own businesses. Students have secured placements with organisations such as Nissan, Caterpillar, Fujitsu, Network Rail, and White Lodging Services, as well as smaller firms in the public, private, and not-for-profit sectors.

What you'll study

Core modules

Many of our courses include a range of modules you can choose from. Some of these options may only be available if you’ve already studied specific required modules. If you’re not sure what you need before picking a module, your course leader can help.

Postgraduate module credits should total 180. If optional modules are available alongside core modules on your course, you should choose an amount that totals 180 credits.

How you'll learn

You’ll study two modules per semester and complete an individual research project. Each module is fully supported by an online learning environment where you'll access all the materials you need.

You’ll also attend weekly seminars where students come together to explore the module topics with fellow aspiring leaders and real industry practitioners.

You'll submit an assessment for each module to ensure you can progress. Assessments are coursework-based and take a variety of forms, from written reports to academic posters. Each assignment will test your ability to apply your learning in the classroom to real-world problems. The course culminates with a research project, which is a single, major piece of work on a topic of your choice.
