Course summary
This design of this course enables people from any discipline or degree background to become project managers. The course content is in line with the requirements of the Project Management Institute (PMI) and the Association for Project Management (APM).
The taught modules ensure you develop a well-rounded set of project and general management skills. These include:
- Project Management basics
- Project delivery methods including agile
- International project management
- Managing people and project leadership
- Understanding organisations
- Project funding and tendering
- Project risk management
- Quality management.
We invite experienced project professionals and project managers to contribute to the course. They share their experiences and provide real-world case studies. Past speakers include the Chief Information Officer of BT, a senior NHS project manager, and senior project management consultants.
We also have close links with the PMI and APM in the north-east. The events organised by them provide you with excellent networking opportunities.
A master's degree in project management will open up a wide range of employment opportunities for you. Project Managers work in most sectors of industry, governments, consulting, non-profit organisations, the arts, and many other sectors. Past graduates of this course work in all these sectors and have developed successful and dynamic careers.
MSc Applied route
This course is available with an applied route. Here, you can put your new skills into practice by applying to undertake a placement year, subject to availability. You can find your own placement, or choose to work on a professional practice project in our Digital Incubator. You could also work on a research-based project with one of our academic research teams.
The placement will enable you to develop your research, knowledge and technical skills. It will also improve your interpersonal, team working, and project management skills. This route will boost your academic performance and future employability prospects.
We can't guarantee external placements for all students but we'll support you in securing one. We'll offer professional or research-based practice projects if an industrial placement isn't possible.
