Course summary

This master’s course is designed for graduates from any discipline who haven’t studied psychology before but want to make a career change. It’s a recognised conversion course that gives you the Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership with the British Psychological Society, which is the essential first step to becoming a chartered psychologist.

The MSc Psychology course gives you a strong grounding in core areas of psychology and prepares you for further postgraduate training in fields such as clinical, forensic, educational, counselling, occupational, or health psychology. You’ll also gain transferable skills in research, critical thinking, and analysis that are valued across a wide range of industries. Research skills are embedded throughout the programme so you can develop a solid understanding of how psychological knowledge is created and applied.

Psychology graduates are in demand in many sectors. With this qualification, you could go on to roles in management, advertising, marketing, human resources, social work, healthcare, the police or prison service, or teaching.

Whether you're aiming to become a professional psychologist or looking to apply psychological insights in a different field, this course offers a flexible and valuable route forward.

What you'll study

Core modules

Many of our courses include a range of modules you can choose from. Some of these options may only be available if you’ve already studied specific required modules. If you’re not sure what you need before picking a module, your course leader can help.

Postgraduate module credits should total 180. If optional modules are available alongside core modules on your course, you should choose an amount that totals 180 credits.

How you'll learn

We use various teaching and learning methods, including lectures, seminars, workshops, and tutorials. Our thriving research programme in health behaviours and mental health supports the research aspects of the course. Our tutors’ specialisms include social psychology and evolutionary psychology. Assessment methods are a combination of coursework, including practical reports, research proposals, and presentations.

Compared to an undergraduate course, you'll find that this master's degree requires a higher level of independent working.

If you choose to study this course full-time, you'll be on campus two days a week, Mondays and Tuesdays, from approximately 9am/9:30am until 4pm/4:30pm. If you study part-time, you'll be on campus one day per week. In year one, this will be a Monday, and in year two, this will be a Tuesday, same timings. If you study this course part-time, you can choose to study it over two or three years.
