The PGCE Secondary Education in History qualifies you to teach history at secondary level in any state-maintained school in England.

This one-year course combines theoretical learning with supervised teaching experience, including placements in diverse educational settings.

On graduation, you’ll be awarded Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), and you’ll already have valuable first-hand teaching experience, as well as a wide network of professional contacts who can help you find the right career opportunities.

Core modules

Many of our courses include a range of modules you can choose from. Some of these options may only be available if you’ve already studied specific required modules. If you’re not sure what you need before picking a module, your course leader can help.

PGCE module credits should total 120. If optional modules are available alongside core modules on your course, you should choose an amount that totals 120 credits.

How you'll learn

PGCE History is a blend of university-based learning and in-school training.

We have partnerships with over 650 schools, colleges, and other educational establishments across the north-east and beyond. Placements are an important part of the degree, and you’ll spend at least 120 days in a school or other educational institution. We’ll work with you to find you the perfect teaching placement with a school that can support your aspirations. During this time, you’ll benefit from practical learning and be supported by school-based trainers and university-based tutors.

Your progress will be assessed with written assignments, case studies, and assessments of your teaching practice.

Fees and finance support

Undergraduate fees are set according to rules from Government in line with forecast inflation. The fee for your first year of study for 2026/27 will be £9,535. You'll pay tuition fees for every year of study. Fees may increase every year based on the Retail Price Index.
