Course summary

Take the next step in your pharmacy career with a course designed to enhance your clinical practice, leadership, education, and research skills, while also gaining your independent prescribing qualification. Whether you're newly qualified or aiming to progress into advanced clinical roles, this part-time course is structured to fit around your existing professional commitments, making it ideal for busy healthcare professionals.

One of the unique features of this course is the integration of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society (RPS) e-Portfolio into your learning. Your assessed work directly contributes to your portfolio, meaning you'll graduate with a comprehensive and structured record that can support future RPS credentialling if you choose to pursue it.

You can choose to complete a Postgraduate Diploma (PgDip) in Clinical Pharmacy over two years or progress to a full MSc over three years. If you already hold a PgDip or equivalent qualification, you may be eligible for the one-year MSc top-up route. As part of the MSc, you'll complete a research project that will equip you with the skills to develop as a capable and confident research practitioner.

On completion of the course, you’ll be well prepared for a range of senior pharmacist roles across the healthcare sector. We’ll support you in planning your career progression with your employer, and many graduates go on to secure promotions, making this a smart and valuable investment in your future.

Many of our courses include a range of modules you can choose from. Some of these options may only be available if you’ve already studied specific required modules. If you’re not sure what you need before picking a module, your course leader can help.

How you'll learn

Teaching is through a blended learning approach. You can work through the interactive distance learning material at your own time and pace. This means you can manage your own study schedule alongside your work commitments within the module timeframe. Learning content includes:

  • Online lectures
  • Expert interviews
  • Directed reading
  • Case-based scenarios
  • Research
  • Tutorials and online tutor support.

We divide the content into small chunks so that even in a short amount of time you can learn something new. For example, you could test your knowledge with self-check quizzes, watch expert consultations, or explore video tutorials.

You’ll also attend on-campus teaching sessions for hands-on clinical skills development and participate in a series of live online seminars. Teaching staff include experienced academic pharmacists working in current practice, specialist advanced clinical pharmacist practitioners, medical consultants, and many other healthcare professionals.

Assessment is through a combination of written coursework and a work-based e-Portfolio. The e-Portfolio assesses learning and development through a variety of supervised learning events (SLEs), tailored to meet the module and course outcomes. SLEs will be assessed in the workplace by either your educational supervisor, practice supervisor (responsible for day-to-day supervision in the workplace setting), or member of the multidisciplinary team (MDT) with suitable experience.
