Course summary

Our In-Sessional English for Academic Purposes (EAP) short courses are free for students who are already studying at the University. If you are a new applicant and want to improve your English before starting your university course, you should take one of our Pre-Sessional EAP short courses instead.

The In-Sessional EAP short courses include two types of modules:

General English for Academic Purposes (EAP)

These modules are open to students from all subjects. Most are designed for students who speak English as a second or foreign language, but we also offer courses for students who have studied in English or have English as their first language.

English for Business Studies (EBS)

These modules are for students studying business-related subjects whose first language is not English.

Both the EAP and EBS modules will help you develop your English and academic skills so you can do well in your main course. Classes are organised by level and skill, allowing you to choose the areas you want to improve.

Each semester is divided into two five-week teaching blocks, and you can take up to two courses per block.

Please note: these courses are in addition to your main course and do not count for credits towards your degree.

How you'll learn

Our language classes are interactive and flexible, designed to help you improve your English in a practical way.

Each session includes a mix of whole-class, group, pair, and individual activities. You'll take part in discussions, debates, presentations, and writing tasks, and use tools such as Sanako language learning software and other online resources. You’ll also review grammar and vocabulary and practise analysing texts.

All sessions are supported by Canvas, where you can find important course materials, practice activities, and submit work for feedback. If you're taking an online class, you'll also use Sanako Connect, a web-based platform for language learning.

You can also use the Language Centre for homework or self-study, where you’ll have access to learning materials and support from a Language Technician.

Each course includes two hours of class per week, plus 30 minutes for optional tutorials.

Courses last five weeks per block, with an extra week for feedback and tutorials. You can take one or two courses per block, and you may join EAP courses in any year of your studies.

Because every student’s English level and needs are different, there is no fixed set of courses you must take. Instead, our course allows you to progress from beginner to advanced academic English.

These courses are unaccredited, so don't count towards your main degree, but you'll complete assessments during the course. If you attend regularly, you'll receive a Certificate of Attendance.
