Course summary

Infection prevention and control (IPC) is fundamental to modern healthcare, and following events like the Covid-19 pandemic have become even more critical. The National Infection Prevention and Control Manual (NIPCM)(opens in new tab) outlines standards required to manage and reduce the risk of current and future events.

This short course, developed and aligned to the NIPCM, will support you in gaining knowledge and understanding of core IPC areas. You'll study two modules – Foundations of Infection Prevention and Control and Contemporary Issues in Infection Prevention and Control – focusing on a range of different topics and creating assessments reflective of IPC practice.

What you'll study

Modules

Many of our courses include a range of modules you can choose from. Some of these options may only be available if you’ve already studied specific required modules. If you’re not sure what you need before picking a module, your course leader can help.

How you'll learn

The course is made up of two modules, each delivered over a 10-week block. Every module includes 10 on-campus teaching days complemented by self-directed study. Teaching takes place at the University throughout the course, with an expectation that you’ll engage in independent learning to further enhance your knowledge.

Learning methods include lectures, seminars, group work, case studies, problem-solving exercises, and directed and independent study. You'll be assessed via a Mini Clinical Evaluation Exercise (MiniCEX), preparation of a professional education resource, and a poster presentation.
