Sustainability agenda

Sustainability in the tourism and leisure industry has been a big concern in recent years, and as such many organisations have examined their processes to try and tackle environmental concerns and sustainable practices. Our MSc in Sustainable Tourism will provide you with a critical understanding of the key issues which will shape the future of the industry.

As well as this, you’ll also dive into some of the challenges that will face different sectors of the industry when implementing substantial changes. Ultimately, you will graduate from this course with a strong understanding of how the theory related to sustainable tourism can be directly related to real-world scenarios.

Transferable skills

Developing the key transferable skills you’ll need to further your career is at the heart of all of our courses. You’ll undertake a Sustainable Tourism Major Project module, where you’ll develop your research skills and explore research that is directly of interest to you. We’re confident that you’ll finish as a highly employable graduate, and many of our students go on to work around the world in a diverse range of sectors.

We are also delighted to see that our hospitality and leisure management programmes have been globally recognised by being ranked in the 2022 QS World University Rankings. At the University of Sunderland, our staff have decades of experience within the tourism, leisure, aviation, and events industries and apply that experience to our teaching in order to enhance your learning experience.

"The course is rich in theory that underpins sustainable planning for tourism. Fieldtrips, guest lectures, and interactive workshops ensure students are well equipped to develop and manage tourism sustainably, which is critical to the future of the industry."

Dr James Scott, Head of School - Law and Tourism

Field trips

To help bring the subject matter to life, we incorporate residential field trips into our tourism courses. As part of the MSc Sustainable Tourism, you’ll get the opportunity to develop your understanding of some of the current practices within the industry by taking a field trip in the UK, previous locations have included York and Kielder Water. We also offer our students the opportunity to undertake field trips overseas and previous destinations have included; Rome, New York and Hong Kong. Field trips are an excellent way to enrich your experience and put what you’ve learned in the classroom into practice.
