Overview
The University of Sunderland Just Add You Bursary recognises the additional costs incurred for students who do not live on the mainland and travel by air or ferry to study at university.
This bursary offers eligible students a £4,050 bursary awarded over three years:
- £400 in Years 1, 2 and 3 of study for flights or ferry to and from the mainland, totaling £1,200
- £1,600 University of Sunderland managed accommodation discount in Year 1 of study
- £250 StudyPlus credit in Year 1 for the purchase of a kitchen and bedding pack
- £150 for summer storage in Years 1 and Year 2 of study, totalling £300
- £700 Graduation supporter package on graduation
Students not living on the mainland are defined as having a home address within Northern Ireland, Isle of Wight, Isle of Man, Isles of Scilly, Channel Islands and Islands of Scotland.
Who's eligible?
1. You must be a 'Home' or 'Overseas Island student
The Government classes all students as 'Home' or 'International'. This status determines which tuition fees you pay, and which bursaries you may be eligible for.
EU students with UK Settled Status at the time of application are eligible for this bursary.
If you are an ‘International’ student, you are not eligible for this bursary.
You must be a first-year student applying to commence a three or four-year full time undergraduate course in autumn 2024 based at City Campus, Sir Tom Cowie at St Peter’s Campus, Dance City, or the Northern Academy of Music Education (NAME).

Some University of Sunderland courses are not eligible for the Just Add You Bursary due to the additional funding that students studying these courses are eligible to receive. These include:
- Medicine MBChB (see our Medicine scholarships and bursaries pages for further information)
Courses where students are in receipt of the NHS Learning Support Fund:
- Midwifery
- All Nursing courses
- Occupational Therapy
- Physiotherapy
- Paramedic Science and Out of Hospital Care
Courses where students are in receipt of an NHS bursary:
- Social Work
Postgraduate courses where undergraduate fees are charged or where students are in receipt of bursaries and scholarships for teacher training:
- PGCE/PCET courses
Undergraduate Initial Teacher Training courses where students can receive a teaching bursary.
You are not eligible for the Just Add You Bursary if you are in receipt of a Troops to Teaching Bursary.
You are not eligible for this bursary if you have been funded by the Enhanced Learning Credits Administration Service (ELCAS).
Students awarded a 2024/25 University of Sunderland Bursary are NOT eligible to receive a Just Add You Bursary.
Students awarded the We Care Bursary are eligible to receive the Just Add You Bursary in addition.
Awarding the bursary
This bursary will be automatically awarded to students identified as having a home address within Northern Ireland, Isle of Wight, Isle of Man, Isles of Scilly, Channel Islands and Islands of Scotland following a checking and verification process after enrolment.
Receiving the bursary
Year 1
- A cash award of £200 in November 2024 and £200 in February 2025, paid to you via bank transfer on the fifth working day of November 2024 and February 2025.
- £250 StudyPlus credit for the purchase of a kitchen and bedding pack following enrolment.
- £1,600 University managed accommodation discount applied across the academic year.
- £150 cash awarded in May 2025 for summer storage costs.
Year 2
- A cash award of £200 in November 2025 and £200 in February 2026, paid to you via bank transfer on the fifth working day of November 2025 and February 2026.
- £150 cash awarded in May 2026 for summer storage costs.
Year 3
- A cash award of £200 in November 2026 and £200 in February 2027 will be paid to you via bank transfer on the fifth working day of November 2026 and February 2027.
- A cash payment of £700 on confirmation of graduation.
If you have an outstanding university debt of £50 or more, you will not receive the bursary until this debt has been cleared.
Bursary awards will only be payable if all tuition fee payments are up to date and there are no monies owed to the University.
The University agrees to pay to you all bursaries and payments that are awarded and due to you whilst you are on your course of study. If a scholarship or bursary payment is made to you in error, the University reserves the right to recover any awards or overpayments from you, the student. This may result in you being asked to repay an award if it was paid to you in error. It is also the responsibility of you, the student, to ensure that all awards and payments received are accurate. Any payment discrepancies will be rectified by the University or the student.
These payments will be made into a UK bank account of your choice. It is your responsibility to enter your bank details onto your e:Vision account so that these payments can then be processed.
If you fail to enter your bank details to enable the payments to be processed before your course end date (or your date of leaving your course of study if earlier), these bursaries and payments will be withdrawn and will no longer be due.
All StudyPlus credit can be rolled forward to the next academic year(s) up until the time of the end of your course of study (or date of leaving the course if earlier).
As part of the admissions process, the University will verify various aspects of a UCAS or direct application to determine fee status. The following criteria will be verified:
- Declared nationality
- Country of birth
- Area of permanent residence
- Date of entry into the UK (If applicable)
- Location of previous education provider
