Course summary

BA (Hons) Education Studies (In-service) is a flexible, part-time course ideal for those working, or with experience in, education – such as teaching assistants, vocational teachers, trainers in the public and third sector, lecturers, curriculum designers, or policy makers. If you fit these criteria, you can enter at level 5 and complete the degree in just two years.

You’ll explore education through historical, economic, philosophical, sociological, and psychological lenses, gaining a strong foundation in its principles, systems, and structures. The course supports career progression or a shift within the education sector.

Having this qualification will prepare you for a career in many different areas of education such as:

  • Informal and vocational learning
  • Care and training roles
  • Professional development
  • Curriculum design.

Please note, this course doesn't qualify you as a teacher, but you'd be guaranteed an interview for one of our PGCE degrees if you decided to take this route upon completion.

What you'll study

Many of our courses include a range of modules you can choose from. Some of these options may only be available if you’ve already studied specific required modules. If you’re not sure what you need before picking a module, your course leader can help.

Undergraduate module credits should total 120 credits per academic year. If optional modules are available alongside core modules on your course, you should choose an amount that totals 120 credits.

How you'll learn

As a part-time student, you'll attend core lectures on evenings or weekends, supplemented by self-study. The course is taught via small group work, workshops, lectures, tutorials, computer-based learning, presentations, and independent learning.

Your progress will be assessed with essays, reports, group work, seminar presentations, and self-evaluation. Throughout the degree you'll have one-to-one support from academic staff.

There's also full-time version of this course available, which is more suitable for traditional undergraduate applicants with no prior work experience.
