Course summary

The BA (Hons) Education Studies (In-service) is a flexible, part-time course. It's for people who work in education or have experience in the field. This includes teaching assistants, vocational teachers, trainers in public or third-sector settings, lecturers, curriculum designers, and policy makers.

If you meet these requirements, you can start at Level 5 and complete the degree in two years.

You'll study education in different ways, including its history, economy, ideas, society, and psychology. You'll also learn how education systems work and how they are organised.

This course can help you move forward in your current job or change to a different role in education.

This qualification can prepare you for a range of careers in education, such as:

  • Informal and vocational learning
  • Care and training roles
  • Professional development
  • Curriculum design.

Please note, this course doesn't qualify you as a teacher, but you'd be guaranteed an interview for one of our PGCE degrees if you decided to take this route upon completion.

What you'll study

Many of our courses include a range of modules you can choose from. Some options may only be available if you’ve already studied specific modules. If you’re not sure what you need before picking a module, your course leader can help.

Undergraduate module credits should total 120 credits per academic year. If optional modules are available, choose an amount that totals 120 credits.

How you'll learn

As a part-time student, you'll attend core lectures in the evenings or at weekends. You'll also study on your own.

Teaching includes small group work, workshops, lectures, tutorials, computer-based learning, and presentations. You'll also complete independent study.

Your work will be assessed through essays, reports, group tasks, presentations, and self-evaluation. You'll receive one-to-one support from academic staff throughout the course.

There's also full-time version of this course available, It's better suited to students who are new to higher education and don't have work experience.

Entry requirements

Fees and finance support

Undergraduate fees are set according to rules from Government in line with forecast inflation. If you're a Home fee-paying student, the fee for your first year of study for 2026/27 will be £9,790. You'll pay tuition fees for every year of study. Fees may increase every year based on the Retail Price Index.

Please note, part-time courses aren't available to international students who require a Student visa to study in the UK.
