Course summary

Looking to make your mark in the fashion industry but can’t decide between fashion design, or fashion promotion and marketing? This course gives you skills and crucial understanding in both areas.

In fashion design, you’ll develop concepts, explore materials, design everything from fabrics to full fashion collections, and develop an understanding of the manufacturing processes. You’ll gain all the skills you’ll need to construct garments – such as pattern making, cutting, sewing, fabric printing, and craftsmanship. You'll also have the opportunity to discover new technologies, using software such as CLO 3D to bring your designs to life.

In the fashion promotion and marketing pathway, you’ll consider the whole fashion market, analyse future trends, develop brands, learn the marketing mix, understand visual merchandising, create promotional materials, and plan and manage events, including fashion shows. You’ll learn graphic design, styling, and photography, and will have access to our fashion journalism expertise.

Previous student placements have included All Saints, Jonathan Saunders, Diesel, and Oasis. Our graduates have gone on to work for high profile companies including Abercrombie and Fitch, River Island, Urban Outfitters, and All Saints.

Integrated Foundation Year

This course is also available with an Integrated Foundation Year. The Integrated Foundation Year is an extra year before starting your three-year undergraduate degree, designed to build your study skills and subject knowledge so you feel ready to succeed.

If you've narrowly missed the entry requirements for the standard three-year route, or have relevant work experience and want to broaden your subject knowledge and study skills before starting your degree, completing an Integrated Foundation Year could be for you. Please note, this route isn't available to international students.

An overview of the Fashion Design and Promotion course
Matthew Gray

What I enjoyed the most on the Fashion Design and Promotion course is the time that the academics spent with me teaching me sewing skills and pattern cutting, as these are skills that I can use day-to-day.

What you'll study

*Placements are subject to availability and placement providers may require an interview as part of the process. If successful, you'll remain an active student and will have access to a wide range of support from Graduate Prospects.

Many of our courses include a range of modules you can choose from. Some of these options may only be available if you’ve already studied specific required modules. If you’re not sure what you need before picking a module, your course leader can help.

Undergraduate module credits should total 120 credits per academic year. If optional modules are available alongside core modules on your course, you should choose an amount that totals 120 credits.

How you'll learn

Teaching is almost entirely practical and studio based, supported by lectures, seminars, tutorials, e-learning, and independent study, and research. Assessment is all coursework based.

In the first year, you’ll cover the fundamental foundation subjects across both fashion design and fashion promotion. In the second year, you'll build on, grow, and develop your knowledge and learning in both disciplines through a series of live projects, competitions, and the annual second year Fashion Show.

You'll have the opportunity to apply to undertake an optional placement year out in industry between your second and final year, which is sometimes known as a sandwich degree.

In your final year, you'll specialise in your chosen pathway, developing your own unique Final Major Project. Previously these have included the creation and production of a full fashion line, developing a brand identity and look book, producing a fashion publication, and creating and delivering a fashion event.
