Course summary

The BSc (Hons) Sports Coaching and Physical Education course is designed for aspiring coaches who want to teach sport in primary, secondary, or tertiary education.

You'll focus on fitness, training, and performance – whether you're developing athletes or delivering PE in line with the national curriculum. The degree follows industry standards set by the Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity (CIMSPA), ensuring you're career-ready from day one.

As part of the course, you’ll complete at least 150 hours of work placements, gaining hands-on experience with schools, sports clubs, gyms, and after-school or holiday programmes. Our strong regional links and close partnerships mean the experience you gain is real, relevant, and valued by employers.

You’ll also be encouraged to earn National Governing Body Coaching Awards, helping you build the skills to become a confident and effective coach or PE teacher across a range of activities.

What you'll study

Many of our courses include a range of modules you can choose from. Some of these options may only be available if you’ve already studied specific required modules. If you’re not sure what you need before picking a module, your course leader can help.

Undergraduate module credits should total 120 credits per academic year. If optional modules are available alongside core modules on your course, you should choose an amount that totals 120 credits.

How you'll learn

Our teaching methods are designed to develop the skills and knowledge required to enhance your employability. These methods include small group work, practical teaching/coaching activities, work-based activities, workshops, lectures, industry speakers, tutorials, laboratory practical sessions, computer-based learning, presentations, and independent learning.

Assessment methods include lab reports, essays, presentations, reflective portfolios, online quizzes and exams, problem based learning, and competency-based practical exercises.

Entry requirements

Our typical offer is 96-112 UCAS Tariff points, from a combination of acceptable Level 3 qualifications which may include: A Levels, T Levels, BTEC Diplomas/Extended Diplomas, Scottish and Irish Highers, Access to HE Diplomas, or the International Baccalaureate.

You also need three passes at GCSE grade C or above, which must include mathematics and English language, or a minimum of Level 2 Key Skills in Communication and Application of Number. If you've studied for a GCSE which has a numerical grade, you'll need to achieve a grade 4 or above.

Additional information

When you apply, you'll be subject to Safeguarding and Fitness to Practise procedures. Prior to admission, a Disclosure and Barring service (DBS) check is required for UK students, whereas for international students, a Certificate of Good Conduct from the domicile police force is required. This is then superseded by a DBS check which must be obtained six months after starting the course.

In addition, an Occupational Health check will be undertaken by the University Occupational Health partner. If required, the health check documentation is sent externally to an independent GP contacted by the University for approval. You'll be asked to complete and sign two self-declaration forms prior to admission and at the beginning of each academic year, one declaring good health and the other personal good conduct. No student will be allowed on placement without the completion of the requisite documentation.

Undergraduate fees are set according to rules from Government in line with forecast inflation. The fee for your first year of study for 2026/27 will be £9,535. You'll pay tuition fees for every year of study. Fees may increase every year based on the Retail Price Index.
